Industrial Applications of Bauxite

1. Aluminum Smelting Industry (Largest Application, over 85% of total consumption)

Production Route

Bauxite → Metallurgical-grade alumina via Bayer or sinter process → Electrolysis to produce aluminum ingots and aluminum alloys

Downstream Uses

  • Lightweight transportation: automobile bodies, engine parts, high-speed train carriages, aircraft fuselages, aluminum structural components for ships

  • Power transmission: high-voltage aluminum cables, transformer aluminum components with light weight and excellent electrical conductivity

  • Packaging & daily goods: beverage cans, food aluminum foil, pharmaceutical packaging, casings for air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions and other home appliances

  • Aerospace & military: lightweight frames for aircraft, missile shells, structural parts for military equipment

  • Machinery & construction: aluminum alloy doors, curtain walls, components for construction machinery

2. Refractory Materials Industry (Second Major Application)

Calcined bauxite clinker features a refractoriness up to 1780 ℃, outstanding thermal shock resistance and slag erosion resistance. Products are divided into shaped, unshaped and refractory fiber types:
  • Shaped refractory products: high-alumina bricks, alumina-magnesia carbon bricks, corundum bricks for lining blast furnaces, converters, ladles, cement rotary kilns, glass melting furnaces and non-ferrous smelting furnaces

  • Unshaped refractory materials: castables, ramming mixes and spray coatings compounded with bauxite aggregate and fine powder, for on-site pouring of kiln repairs, special-shaped ladles and iron runners

  • Aluminum silicate refractory fibers: blankets, boards and fireproof cloth made by melting and blowing at high temperature; low thermal conductivity for thermal insulation of high-temperature equipment, energy saving of industrial kilns, fireproof garments and nuclear heat insulation parts

3. Precision Casting Industry

Fine powder ground from high-alumina clinker is used to make investment casting shells for lost foam and lost wax processes:
  • Cast shells deliver high heat resistance, stable dimensional accuracy and low deformation

  • Suitable for precision castings of military fittings, aerospace parts, instruments, medical devices and high-end machinery, yielding smooth castings free of blowholes

4. Ceramics Industry

(1) Architectural & Sanitary Ceramics

10%–20% bauxite added into green bodies improves density, hardness and impact resistance of tiles, toilets and basins, preventing deformation and cracking during firing, ideal for high-grade polished and antique tiles.

(2) Electronic & Special Industrial Ceramics

High-purity bauxite is sintered into alumina ceramic substrates for circuit boards, chip packaging and high-frequency insulation components; high-hardness insulating bauxite is adopted for wear-resistant ceramic pipelines, ceramic bearings and high-temperature aerospace ceramic parts.

5. Chemical & Water Treatment Industry

  • Water purification flocculants: raw material for aluminum sulfate and polyaluminum chloride (PAC), core reagents for municipal sewage, industrial wastewater and tap water purification

  • Aluminum salt chemical feedstock: production of aluminum hydroxide, aluminum pigments, catalysts and printing mordants

  • High-alumina rapid-hardening cement (bauxite cement): calcined mixture of bauxite and limestone with fast setting, high strength and acid-alkali resistance, used for emergency repairs, low-temperature construction, refractory floors and special underground projects

6. Abrasives, Fillers and Other Auxiliary Fields

  • Artificial corundum abrasives: brown and white corundum smelted from bauxite in electric arc furnaces for grinding wheels, cutting discs and polishing powder applied in metal cutting, hardware grinding and stone polishing

  • Filler for rubber, plastic and coatings: ultrafine bauxite powder enhances wear resistance, weather resistance and flame retardancy of plastics and anti-corrosion paints

  • Welding flux additive: stabilizes electric arc, reduces spatter and optimizes weld formation

  • Petroleum proppants (ceramic sand): high-strength ceramsite sintered from bauxite as fracturing support aggregate for oil and gas wells

Grade Matching Classification

  1. Metallurgical grade: high alumina-silica ratio with controlled impurities for alumina and electrolytic aluminum production

  2. Refractory grade: Al₂O₃ ≥48%, low iron and impurities for calcined refractory clinker

  3. Casting & ceramic grade: uniform fineness and stable whiteness with strictly limited ferric oxide to avoid yellow discoloration

  4. Water treatment chemical grade: easy dissolution of aluminum ions, moderate requirements on whiteness and fineness
